Who Plays Alex, Prince Henry, More?
It’s one of #BookTok’s favorite titles so it’s an understatement that we’re excited to see the announcement of the Red, White And Royal Blue cast to bring Casey McQuiston’s best-selling novel to the small screen.
Per a press release from Prime Video, the premise of the show is as follows: “Alex Claremont-Diaz, the son of the first woman President of the United States, and Britain’s Prince Henry have a lot in common: stunning good looks, undeniable charisma, international popularity…and a total disdain for each other. Separated by an ocean, their long-running feud hasn’t really been an issue, until a disastrous—and very public—altercation at a royal event becomes tabloid fodder driving a potential wedge in US/British relations at the worst possible time.
Going into damage control mode, their powerful families and respective handlers force the two rivals into a staged “truce.” But as Alex and Henry’s icy relationship unexpectedly begins to thaw into a tentative friendship, the friction that existed between them sparks something deeper than they ever expected. Based on Casey McQuiston’s critically acclaimed New York Times bestseller, Red, White & Royal Blue marks the feature film writing and directing debut of Tony Award-winning playwright Matthew López [The Inheritance].”
Speaking with Variety on June 1, 2022, the author said: “It has been a thrill to hand this story over to Berlanti/Schechter, Amazon and our fearless leader Matthew López and watch them make so many smart, bold, thoughtful choices to bring it to life,” McQuiston said. “This casting is no exception.”

This Latin actor is not brown enough.’ It’s very unsettling because I would hate the industry to start saying Latin is [only] dark-brown skin and black hair,” he explains. “I feel like, once they start understanding that we are so diverse, we just need more BIPOC folks in positions of power to make these decisions and let fewer non-BIPOC people speak for them.”
In an interview with Newsweek in August 2023, Taylor-Zakhar Perez opened up about the popularity of the book and how he landed the role. “I hadn’t heard of the book or read the book before the audition came. I think a friend of mine auditioned or something, and he sent it to me. He’s like, ‘Hey, have you got this audition?’ And I said, ‘No, I don’t know what that is.’”
He continued, “He’s like, ‘Well, here’s the book, I think they’re gonna start casting it.’ So I started to read it, and it was an incredible book. I really didn’t have any idea that it was so popular until I started telling people that I might be going to England for a project, and everybody was freaking out. Even my publicist was like, ‘Oh, my God, I read that during COVID. It’s an amazing book.’ I really didn’t know the magnitude of it.”
